One Button Games: Why the Simplest Free Games Are the Hardest to Put Down

Design notes from a solo dev · August 2026

I build a one button game for a living, so I think about this more than a healthy person should. Flappy Bird, Crossy Road, Timberman, Helix Jump: the games people describe as easy to play and impossible to stop playing all share one design decision. A single input.

Easy to learn is a feature, not a compromise

A one button game teaches itself in the first two seconds. There is no tutorial to skip, no control scheme to memorize, no settings to tune. You tap, something happens, you understand the game. That zero friction start is why the best free browser games tend to be simple ones: when a game costs nothing and loads instantly, the last barrier left is comprehension, and one button removes it.

One input does not mean one decision

Here is the trick of the genre. The button is simple but the timing is not. In Loop Chomp your only move is flipping direction around a ring, but every flip is a bet about where the next spike bar lands, whether the snack is worth the detour, and how much room you have left. Depth comes from when you press, not what you press. Good one button games are decision-dense and input-simple, and that gap between how easy it looks and how hard it plays is exactly what makes people say one more run.

Fast failure is the engine

Runs in these games end in seconds when you are bad and minutes when you are great, and the restart is instant. Failure costs nothing but pride, so you retry without thinking. Stack a leaderboard on top, where the players above you are real people you can pass mid-run, and the loop closes itself.

Why they belong in the browser

One button games do not need a download, an install, or a login. They are the perfect shape for a free browser game: open a link, play in two seconds, close the tab, come back tomorrow. It is the same reason they took over phones a decade ago, except the browser skips even the app store.

Try the theory

Loop Chomp is my attempt at getting all of this right: one tap, free, no download, with daily runs, a 60 mission campaign and global leaderboards layered on top of a two second tutorial. Judge for yourself, then read the full guide or the dev log if you want the behind the scenes.
