Flappy Bird vs Flappy Dunk: Same Tap, Different Kind of Hard

Honest takes from a one-tap dev · October 2026

Flappy Dunk took Flappy Bird’s famous tap to flap and changed one rule. In Flappy Bird you die by touching something; in Flappy Dunk you die by missing something, because the ball has to go through every hoop. That one change turns a game about avoidance into a game about aim, and it makes the two feel very different despite the identical controls.

Flappy Bird spawned an entire genre of one-tap imitators, most of them forgettable. Flappy Dunk, from Voodoo in 2017, is one of the few that understood the original well enough to change it in an interesting way.

Flappy Bird: the art of not touching

Dong Nguyen released Flappy Bird in 2013, it exploded in early 2014, and he pulled it from the stores at the peak of its fame. Tap to flap, gravity pulls you down, and you thread a bird through gaps in green pipes. Touch anything and it is over. The score is simply how many pipes you passed.

Everything about it is about staying out of trouble. The best runs are calm, a steady rhythm of taps that keeps the bird in the middle of every gap. Panic is what kills you.

Flappy Dunk: the art of hitting the target

Flappy Dunk keeps the tap and the gravity but swaps the bird for a basketball and the pipes for hoops. Instead of avoiding obstacles you must pass through every hoop, and missing one ends the run. Going through cleanly without touching the rim is a swish, worth more, and clean swishes in a row build bonuses. Stars you collect unlock new balls and looks.

Why one rule changes everything

Which to play

If you want the purest, most punishing version of the one-tap idea, Flappy Bird and its many faithful clones are the reference. If you want the same controls with a more forgiving, target-shooting feel and some light unlocks, Flappy Dunk is a good time.

As a design lesson, the pair is perfect: same input, same physics, one rule flipped, and you get a completely different game. That is the whole magic of one-button design.

If you like both

If you enjoy seeing how far a single input can go, Loop Chomp takes a different angle on it: instead of flapping, one tap reverses your direction around a ring. It is free in the browser, and like Flappy Dunk it gives you snacks to chase that tempt you into risky lines.

Quick answers

What is the difference between Flappy Bird and Flappy Dunk? Both use tap to flap, but Flappy Bird ends when you touch a pipe while Flappy Dunk ends when you miss a hoop. One is about avoiding, the other about aiming.

Who made Flappy Dunk? Flappy Dunk was released by Voodoo in 2017.

Why was Flappy Bird removed? Its creator, Dong Nguyen, pulled it from the app stores in February 2014 at the height of its popularity.
